Recently, the ranking of the world’s best olive oils for 2013 and 2014 has been released and, once again, Spain is leader when it comes to producing premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
This ranking is published by World Best Olive Oils, anon-profit non-government organization (www.worldsbestoliveoils.org). They make this ranking based in 16 international competitions that take place all over the world every year and Spain has always been a main player in all of them.
That should not be a surprise, since, according to the International Olive Oil Council, Spain produces almost half of the world’s olive oil and Spaniards are the second in the world when it comes to consuming olive oil. This means that Spain’s olive oil culture is so important that they have been working hard for centuries to achieve to produce the best olive oils in the world, and they have succeeded.
The five olive oils which have been most awarded in this past two years were Spanish, there are 8 Spanish olive oils in the top 10 and 29 in the top 50.

As the ranking shows, Andalucia and Extremadura, two southern regions of Spain, are the best producers of olive oil in Spain and, consequently, in the world. The reason why is because of their mild weather, so convenient for the olive tree, and because of the long tradition of olive oil producers that dates back to the Roman Empire.
